The Shoe Tree is closing its doors, December 2026.

With heavy hearts, we announce that The Shoe Tree is closing its doors at the end of 2026. 

After over 120 years in business we have made the difficult decision to wind down our business and the tradition of the Meloney family selling shoes on Cape Breton Island. 

This small, family owned business has faced many challenges over the years:  two world wars;  economic downturns; the arrival of shopping malls and big-box stores; the growth of online shopping and, most recently, a global pandemic. Through each challenge, our loyal customers have stayed with us and continue to choose to shop local and, for that, we are so grateful.

The decision to close has not been made lightly. Our priority remains our dedicated and loyal employees. We are nothing without the amazing team of people who show up every week, ready to work and provide a beautiful and welcoming environment for all of our customers. We are incredibly grateful to them, most especially for their compassion and understanding when told of our decision to close. 

The Shoe Tree will remain open throughout the Fall season as we work to clear inventory. Our final day will be in December. We will keep you updated as we near that time. 

It has been a pleasure serving you over the last 120 years, Cape Breton Island.
